60 Kitchen Island Ideas That Combine Form and Function in 2024

kitchen island design

Islands come in all shapes in sizes, whether you want an extra workspace you can move around on wheels or you want a large island with a breakfast bar. Choosing a countertop with a seamless transition from the top to the sides is sure to make a statement. This feature comes in a range of materials, from marble or stone to stainless steel or wood. If you're looking for a way to make your kitchen stand out, then you're going to love this kitchen island idea. Use detailed tiles on the side of your island instead of focusing on pops of color or wall art to make an impact.

Add two islands to divide the space

This can help to bring extra color and pattern, but also make the kitchen work as one,' she adds. Designing a long, narrow kitchen means sometimes you have to get creative with layouts and design details. Is making space for an island and a dining area is important for you, try introducing a floating table at the end of your island. While painted kitchens have dominated kitchen trends in recent years, we are seeing a shift to more organic finishes. Introducing a wooden kitchen island is a great way to introduce a more rustic element to your kitchen scheme.

A Place for Preparing and Cooking Food

'Worktables offer added space and can include clever kitchen storage ideas to hide not only kitchen items but also office paraphernalia,' he adds. In this kitchen, two kitchen islands have been introduced – one for cooking and food prep, the other for dining and socializing. Double island kitchens are a great way to make the most of a large space and maximize storage. 'For example, a marble-topped island can create an elegant space for people to gather around while entertaining, while the walnut-topped center island is perfect for cooking prep,' she explains. It could also serve as the home of your sink and stove, microwave, or dishwasher, whatever appliances you choose for both style and functionality. Furniture-style islands can be great for antique lovers or DIYers looking to repurpose an old table, dresser, or bookshelf.

Add Texture Through Woven Bar Stools

The kitchen island is part of the room that provides an extra spot for meal prepping, cooking, gathering for casual meals or coffee breaks, and even extra storage space. Aside from all its practical uses, the island can also serve as a decorative focal point of the room. Islands with built-in cabinetry are functional and give your kitchen a sophisticated farmhouse feel. Conceal frequently used kitchen items such as pots and pans in your cabinets to keep them from cluttering your countertops. Create additional storage space by choosing an island with an open framework and a bottom shelf.

‘Islands are an eye-catching feature in a kitchen but they can eat up a substantial amount of space,’ says Graeme Smith. ‘So when thinking about adding one into the design, it is important to consider the available space and the circulation area around the island. Fluting around a kitchen island can be far more than just a decorative surface.

Both a statement standout for the space and a practical decision, using two different counter materials together allows you to take your kitchen island countertop ideas and really run with it. In this design, above, Along Came Lennox founder Kara Harden opted for kitchen island seating at both ends to foster a natural conversation zone. 'By making the island seating on just one end or both sides of the island you can have the seating and the flow your layout calls for,' agrees designer Emily Brownwell, founder of Gilded Hearth.

One half, of stainless steel, has a butcher-block top and includes containers underneath for garbage and recyclables and knife storage on one side and a towel bar on the other. The other half, which features a marble countertop for rolling out dough, sits at a lower height and has locking casters and storage baskets. A 3-inch-thick granite countertop balances the heft of this 9-foot-square kitchen island. In addition to storage and eating space, the island contains the cooktop, sink, dishwasher, and wine cooler. For more versatile island function, consider pairing a large, permanent island and a smaller, mobile one. When placed against the installed island, this black-painted cart extends the counter space, but it can be easily relocated for convenient use elsewhere.

Kitchen island ideas – 20 ways to create a fabulous and functional feature

The cube shape looks great with other geometric furnishings, like the globe lights and grid tile layout in this mid-century kitchen. You can design a new kitchen island to look traditional with the help of a few details. Turned wood legs, bead board, and an antique paint finish combine to give this new island a vintage French country look. This sweet country kitchen is made all the more functional by a large island with a sink and eating area. The extended table portion feels airy and allows more storage under the island.

More cofounder Kurt Bielawski’s showstopping 11-foot kitchen island invites guests to gather around the heart of this Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas. And dinner party prep is mastered with a custom JennAir 15-inch induction cooktop integrated into the rose-hued Calacatta marble countertop. 'Our ‘Kew’ design centers around a colossal preparation table with push-me-pull-me drawers for utensils, knives, and chopping boards. Being in the kitchen center, it gives a surface to link the sink, stove, and food storage, ideal for prep, mixing, serving, and even sitting,' Merlin adds. 'Depending on the space and how it's used, a great way to make sure you have a functional kitchen layout is to create a kitchen triangle of the major appliances with the island,' advises designer Linda Hayslett. The idea of choosing a different countertop for your kitchen island sounds rather appealing, right?

So, how do you make a built-in island look right in a traditional kitchen? Try adding details like the corbels and framing used here for a more old-world look. Your kitchen island should be counter-height to be a comfortable surface for prepping food. Casters are a great hack to add to vintage items, as they add height and make a piece mobile, increasing its function and versatility.

Porcelain looks similar to natural stone but is easier to clean and stain-resistant. This countertop comes in almost any pattern and shade, giving you plenty of options, no matter your kitchen style. Islands that mimic the rest of the kitchen, typically by using cabinets in the same finish and from the same manufacturer, don’t call attention to themselves. If the island is going to be dedicated to cleanup, you’ll need a place for dish towels, detergent, and brushes.

Make sure to place your barstool seating on the opposite side of the drawers so you don't have to worry about moving your seating every time you reach for a drawer handle. Kitchen island ideas come in all, shapes, sizes, and styles – it's all about choosing the right design for your space. Consider how it fits into your scheme as well as how it works with the flow of your space – as long as it nails both style and function, a kitchen island can really elevate your kitchen scheme. Decorating with a moody color palette can seem intimidating, but it can create an elegant kitchen when done right. Painting a kitchen island black and topping it with a statement marble countertop makes for a chic feature. Kitchen island ideas boost the room’s preparation and storage space whilst also adding additional seating space.

So, if you're looking to explore some expert-endorsed island ideas, you're in luck. We've approached a team of interior and kitchen designers to help you design a kitchen island that truly puts the 'heart' in the 'heart of the home'. This kitchen is a midcentury modern dream, with all the beautiful wood tones, the unique light fixtures, and the avocado-green upholstered dining chairs.

If you really want to lose the fried fish smell, include a second exhaust fan mounted in the ceiling. It will also help limit the amount of moisture condensing on the inside of your windows in the winter when you use a tall stockpot. However, it's important to remember that adding at least one element of contrast into the room is key – here, the rough plaster of the white walls offers the relief. Wine coolers built into a kitchen island are a great investment, as they will free up space in the refrigerator, as well as the worktop while keeping your wine in optimum condition.

Where was The Goonies filmed? The House & all the Locations in Astoria

goonies house address

The field where Andi practices cheer during the car chase was formerly John Warren Field. Unfortunately, after some digging to find the location, I found out that it is gone. The field was converted into part of the Columbia Memorial Hospital. If you still want to see where it was during the filming of the Goonies, the field used to be at the corners of 20th Street and Exchange Street. The opening scene of The Goonies takes place in a real prison in Astoria, formerly the Clatsop County Jail, where Jake Fratelli makes his prison break.

Where to see Manatees in Crystal River

I just think that it was a combination of how the script was written with the music, that symphony that played, that music, tied in so perfectly. It reminds me of ‘Back to the Future,’ which is also probably my second set of favorite movies. ‘Back to Future’ and ‘Goonies’ are like neck and neck, but there was only one ‘Goonies’ movie. That would be signage, it might be parking meters, it might be physical things that we can do that we can do that would help guide people in the right direction. Behman and Liz Zakeri are pictured in January 2023, in front of their new home in Astoria, which was used in the filming of the 1985 cult classic "The Goonies."

‘The Goonies’ house in Astoria has a new superfan owner

Zakeri adds that he is looking forward to reliving hismemories from the film that shaped his childhood now that he is the home's new owner. Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. "Every Goonie should know that I view myself as the caretaker and steward of the home," he expressed. "Decades down the road someone else will get to own this dream as their own just as I do. My goal is to preserve and protect this iconic landmark." The two-story Victorian home has panoramic views of the same gorgeous Pacific Northwest coastline showcased in the movie that Zakeri says he is dedicated to preserving. Between Astoria and Cannon Beach is Ecola State Park which is home to a few more Goonies Film locations.

Goonies Filming Locations You Can Visit

This scene is from along the Indian Beach trail through Ecola State Park. Hit the link here to read about more iconic spots that were filmed in the classic film. Zakeri said he had to pull equity out of other real estate properties that he owns in order to buy the Goonies house.

To enter the state park you must have a pass which is around $8-10. The Flavel House Museum is located at 441 8th Street, Astoria and is seen in the movie as The Astoria Historical Museum where Mikey’s dad works as a museum curator. The Goonies pass the museum on their bikes on their way to search for One Eyed Willie and his treasure. Right next door and just a short zip line ride away Data’s house. Data’s house address is th Street, Astoria, but again, because of the no trespassing request, it isn’t available to see. You can park near the dock and walk along the piers to take in views of the fishing boats and cargo ships that frequent the Columbia River.

An offer was accepted six days after the house was listed, according to public record. In this undated photo provided by RETO Media is the house featured in the Steven Spielberg film The Goonies in Astoria, Ore. If there are any changes in parking codes or rules like that, how do you enforce those things? And the third one I think would be the least interesting to us, if we can avoid getting into enforcement, because that requires resources and energy that we’d rather not spend.

Since the movie came to theaters in 1985, fans have flocked to the home in northwestern Oregon's historic port of Astoria. The city celebrates Goonies Day on June 7, the film's release date, and welcomes thousands of people for the event. Keep your eyes peeled while you explore the community as you may find special themed items at your favorite stores, restaurants, pubs, and other locations.

Astoria has a bunch of resident sea lions that you can watch now too. Again in the opening credits, Rosalita is seen crossing the street with groceries as the Fratellis pass in their “this real neat ORV” followed by police. This store in the background of this shot is now Astoria Coffee Co. and is located at th Street, Astoria. The town of Astoria, Oregon sits on the Oregon Coast along the Columbia River where it meets the Pacific Ocean.

The Goonies prison address is 732 Duane Street, Astoria, and has since been converted into the Oregon Film Museum. The museum features exhibits from many of the motion pictures filmed in Oregon and the Astoria area. Kindergarten Cop, Free Willy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Short Circuit top the list of movies filmed in Astoria. Oregon Film MuseumDid you know more than 300 films and television shows have been made in Oregon? View Goonies displays, learn more about the film industry in Astoria and around the state, and access interactive green-screens to make your own clips. There you can reenact the Fratelli break out scene, since this museum is housed in the historic county jail used in the opening scene of The Goonies.

Also a fun bonus - the elementary school that's nearby was used in Kindergarten Cop! There is no street parking close to The Goonies House, so you may want to park a few blocks away and walk to The Goonies house. The signs were posted not long after the 30th anniversary of the film by the homeowner, Sandi Preston. At the time, with up to around 1500 guests visiting daily, it had become a bit much for her. While decorating plans are in its early stages, Zakeri said he and his family plan to be at the Goonies house on the city’s Goonies Day celebration on June 7 — the film’s national release date anniversary — and Halloween. Zakeri told FOX Business that fans and production companies will be able to rent the home for extended stays that are "31 days or more," according to the city’s moratorium on short-term vacation rentals.

The Goonies House, better known as Mikey's house, is one of the most popular attractions in Astoria. In some awesome news for Goonies fans across the world, the iconic famous home in Astoria that was a huge part of the classic Oregon film from 1985 is once again open for visitors to see. Lighthouse Lounge was constructed for the movie and was part of an elaborate set, and torn down after filming.

Here they are in order of appearance in the film so crank up your Cyndi Lauper, shout “hey you guys” in your best Sloth voice, and start your Goonies road trip. And the acting was so funny, serious, done so well, they set the bar so high with everything in the movie. I mean how they picked all those characters, how did you find Chunk? You found Sean Astin, you found all these characters that played the roles as kids to a ‘T.’ So I think that’s what it was and I think that every boy and girl resonates because there were two Goonies girls, right? So I think that sense of adventure and that just chase for a treasure hunt.

Best Cruise Ships: Discover Our Top Rated Ships

royal cruise ship

There are full-blown Starbucks cafes on some ships or at least a Starbucks stand. What Royal Caribbean cruisers all have in common is that they love a big, bustling resort experience. During the winter, the line will move even more of its ships to the Caribbean and send a few to Asia and Australia. For megaresort lovers, Royal Caribbean may be the ultimate cruise line.

Find a Royal Princess Cruise from $178

Odyssey of the Seas is the newest of Royal Caribbean's five Quantum Class ships. The five-ship series debuted in 2014 with the unveiling of Quantum of the Seas and is the newest class of ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet (until the arrival of the Icon Class of ships in January). Icon of the Seas is the belle of the ball at Royal Caribbean — the line's newest and most state-of-the-art ship. It's also the biggest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet and, indeed, the biggest ship ever built by any line. Sail from Rome or Barcelona onboard the wow-worthy Oasis of the Seas® to Western Mediterranean shores.

YOUR TICKET TO EXOTIC ADVENTURES

Royal Caribbean also offers dedicated teen and tween programs on ships for children ages 12 to 17. On some vessels, such as the Quantum Class ships, you'll find a dedicated space with games and a widescreen TV called The Living Room where teens can hang out, plus a teens-only disco called Fuel. Royal Caribbean also operates a Royal Babies nursery program for children ages 6 to 18 months old that includes interactive child and parent classes with activities developed by early childhood experts. The Royal Tots program (for ages 18 months to 3 years) offers 45-minute interactive playground sessions with age-appropriate activities and toys.

One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your experience even more all-inclusive, you can opt for beverage and specialty dining packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet.

Royal Caribbean's oldest cruise ships — those built in the 1990s and early 2000s — in many cases are half to a third the size of the line's newest vessels and have far fewer venues on board. Still, even these smaller ships offer a lot of attractions as compared to many vessels at competing lines. Inside the vessels, as on Icon of the Seas, you'll find a seemingly endless number of lounges, bars, restaurants and shops, as well as large casinos, spas and showrooms. Having been the first of the Royal Class vessels, the Royal Princess deck plan served as the blueprint for the rest of the ships in its class. Public spaces are grouped together on decks 5, 6, 7 and 16 to 19, whereas cabins take the rest of the decks. The only exception is Deck 16 (Lido), which is home to a few cabins along with the pool and a number of dining options.

A passenger staying in suites can get to the Diamond Plus level with just 13 seven-night cruises. Take a few longer voyages, like a transatlantic sailing, and you can reach it even sooner. The second-to-highest tier, Diamond Plus (175 points), brings Concierge Club access, priority seating at onboard shows, an exclusive number to call for bookings and reduced rates for solo travelers, plus other things. The top Pinnacle Club level brings free cruises after hitting key milestones. The currency used on all Royal Caribbean ships is U.S. dollars, no matter where they are in the world. All vessels operate on a "cashless system," with any onboard purchases you make posting automatically to your onboard account.

Every ship in the fleet offers a range of delicious complimentary dining options, but you can dig into even more crave-worthy flavor by purchasing a Specialty Dining Package for less ahead of your cruise. Add a Specialty Beverage Package — which includes unlimited alcoholic beverages, soda, and more — and your experience is as close to all-inclusive as it gets. And with so many complimentary shows and attractions onboard, you can easily fill every sea day without spending a single dollar extra. One of three ships in the line's Freedom class that date to the mid-2000s, Freedom of the Seas is no longer the creme-de-la-creme of the Royal Caribbean fleet (though it was when it debuted). At around 156,000 tons, it's about 30% smaller than Royal Caribbean's newer Oasis-class ships and has fewer venues, from bars and restaurants to entertainment spaces. Some Royal Caribbean ships — such as the line's Oasis-class vessels and recently launched Icon of the Seas — are built with far more family-focused activities than others.

How to Have an Epic Family Vacation Onboard Rhapsody of the Seas Royal Caribbean Cruises

Every vessel has a main dining room and a casual buffet eatery where meals are included in the fare — the latter called either Windjammer Café or Windjammer Marketplace. For dinner in the main dining room, you must sign up for either My Time Dining, which is where you go whenever you want, or Traditional Dining, where you have a fixed table and time for dinner. Five of the these six giant ships, all similar in design, are part of what's known as the Oasis Class — a hugely popular series of massive megaships that began debuting in 2009 and have changed the face of cruising. A sixth Oasis Class ship — Utopia of the Seas — is scheduled to join the fleet later this year, and the line recently ordered a seventh vessel in the series that'll be ready in 2028. Royal Caribbean is the world's largest cruise line by passenger capacity, with 27 ships that together offer nearly 100,000 berths. The biggest ship in the world is going even bigger on flavor, with limitless options to satisfy every palette.

Vision of the Seas is the newest of Royal Caribbean's Vision Class ships, which are the smallest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet. Unlike most Royal Caribbean ships, they offer fewer onboard attractions and amenities than is typical for the line's vessels. Like Serenade of the Seas, it's a Radiance Class ship, and that means it's significantly smaller than the line's newer Oasis Class and Quantum Class ships. However, it is still loaded with venues, including more than a half-dozen places to eat, three pools, whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, a miniature golf course, a sports court and an adults-only solarium. Like its newer sister Independence of the Seas, it's smaller than Royal Caribbean's giant Oasis Class ships but still is big enough to pack in a lot of options for cruisers.

Finding your crew’s just-right space is easy, with more rooms designed for families. With a kid-approved sprawling aquapark, a pool just for grownups, plus plenty of bites to fuel up for bolder bonding — your whole crew will never want to leave. Note the suite complex is a gated community — one where you'll only be surrounded by other swells who have paid top dollar for exclusivity.

From rejuvenating spa treatments and the tranquility of a top-deck retreat reserved just for adults to our state-of-the-art fitness centers, you’ll find all the elements to come back new. Feel the court under your feet and the thrill of victory as you sink the ball in for two points. No matter your athletic ability, there’s nothing like shooting a few hoops out in the middle of the ocean as you watch the sun set and the stars come out.

Here, we list our top picks for the best Royal Caribbean cruise ships for five different types of travelers. Royal Caribbean's older ships are a half to a third smaller and lack many of the above features. They have a much more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold far fewer people. On Royal Caribbean's newest and biggest Oasis Class vessels, for instance, you'll find three separate main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. Unveiled way back in 1996, it's not just the oldest Royal Caribbean ship but the smallest Royal Caribbean ship — far smaller than the newest Royal Caribbean vessels.

But of all the activities the new world's largest cruise ship has to offer, my eight favorites are, for the most part, ones I've yet to see on another vessel. Many families choose Princess; multigenerational groups (grandparents, adult children, grandkids) enjoy the dining and entertainment options and the line's solid family programs, particularly during the summer and holidays. During the Alaska season, the average age is mid- to late 50s; on warm-weather itineraries, the average age skews higher into the 60s (except during school holidays). Royal Caribbean designs its ships to appeal to a broad mix of people, in part by offering a wide range of cabin types at varying price points. On a typical sailing, you might find an entry-level cabin for around $100 per person per night, while a high-end suite is five or 10 times that amount. Members earn points for every night they sail on one of the line's ships, with double points awarded to passengers staying in suites.

There are also connecting stateroom options, as well as Two Bedroom Family Suites, with room for up to eight guests, which offer more living space, a balcony and two bathrooms, including a full bath tub. Take a break and indulge in a private getaway at The Sanctuary, our exclusive adults-only retreat offering a relaxing alternative to the myriad outdoor activities and entertainment available elsewhere on the ship. With signature beverages, light meals, and al fresco massages, Serenity Stewards attend to your every need, whether it’s to be on hand to provide chilled face towels or Evian water atomizers. With a rich wood décor and a theater-style kitchen, it’s no wonder Crown Grill was named among the “Best Cruise Ship Steakhouses” by USA TODAY.

It sounds too good to be true, but I purchased the package for my wife and me. I only selected my reservation since is says it's for two. I’d rather them just cancel everyone than honor the mistake, and jack up the baseline price of all cruises to recover their losses. So yes all of the sailings I was able to snag this for say sold out or working on the fun under packages. So hopefully they honor them because it was for sure a glitch.

Others suggested that those who purchased the package should be given at least the same value in the form of WiFi for two devices. Some guests felt that the company had engaged in false advertising and should honor the package for those who had purchased it. It’s an identical package to what is offered by sister brand, Celebrity Cruises.

It's a way to feel like a VIP on your cruise, especially on embarkation and disembarkation day. The appeal of any VIP package for a cruise is a way to enjoy added benefits without spending the money for a suite or having sufficient loyalty program points. The cost of the Premier Pass is advertised for both of our sailings at $88.99 and it covers two guests.

Premier Pass package

I have two upcoming Anthem cruises, one next month and one in July. I DO NOT CARE  how much they have to jack up the prices on Coco Cay Cabanas in order for this promotion to work out for everyone who has purchased it. Except in this case, they took the time to insert the “Offer is non-transferable and not combinable with Crown & Anchor discounts or any other offer or promotion” disclaimer in the fine print. Of course probably done by a 3rd party with no knowledge of the company. Teachable moment for that darned intern, lol. We reserve the right to refuse or cancel any order prior to delivery.

If you've not used it all by the end of the cruise the remainder is refunded to your original form of payment. Posting her what I discovered on another forum. There is a new package that looks to have just appeared in cruise planner overnight, Premier Pass Package. If you're booking online, it's on the top menu called "packages". From what i've read seems hit or miss, some people have available, some don't, but the benefits seem too good to be true.

With the Premier Pass, you can skip the lines and enjoy a more seamless and stress-free cruising experience. The Premier Pass enhances your cruising experience by providing you with a number of exclusive benefits and amenities that are not available to other guests. With priority access to onboard amenities and activities, you can maximize your time on the ship and ensure that you have the best possible experience. I have two Celebrity sailings booked (August 2023 and April 2024) but the pass is not available for either. There is a tab for ”packages”, but the only packages available are drinks and dining. Onboard activities list the all-access tour for $116 each.

Not offered on my May2023 Odyssey or Aug2023 Quantum, but it was offered on Oct2023 Wonder which I snagged. If you are talking about your Pre-cruise OBC (I did the exact same thing), you can just cancel it, and your OBC should be immediately returned, and then you can rebook with your CC. Also committed the cardinal sin of using OBC instead of a CC to purchase for our december cruise, so if they refund, i am not sure how that will shake out. And I knew this could happen cause I was here yesterday.

It is available  to lots of others already booked. There is no more designated ”surf” and “surf/stream”. Lol I’d be curious to see how it actually works. The tour and the internet are the selling points for us, but really not much else because we don’t drink wine.

Cruise Line Adds “Glacier Day” to Its Alaskan Cruise Itineraries

Yes, it may be a gamble but it isn't like I am counting on this particular set of amenities. If it works, good...if not, that is not a huge issue. The purchase of a Premier Pass does not include meals, and there may be additional charges for certain onboard activities and amenities.

Unfortunately, this product is not available for Royal Caribbean International guests. As a result, The Premier Pass has been removed from My Cruise Planner. We’re sorry for any confusion caused by this. I was able to get it for my Mariner 2024 Jan sailing, we have 3 in the cabin so I purchased 2.

I work in operations on an international level and I'd be fired for this by now. We are booked on a 4 day and 3 day cruise next month on Liberty and I just added it to our account. I didn't cancel the internet package that we had bought during the Black Friday sale yet. I've called Royal myself to confirm that 1 package covers the 2 guests for the activities listed and have booked one for upcoming 3/25 sailling. We see if it holds up, cause it's a steal of a deal.

I just added it to my Oct Allure sailing, we have 4 rooms and 8 people so I did 4 packages. The cost alone was cheaper than the internet and we get the extras. Is the internet with Premier Pass the same two devices that would be purchased with the internet package? Looking at the costs I'm seeing, it would be less expensive for me to purchase the Premier Pass just for internet alone.

Many took to Twitter to express their disappointment and frustration with the company. Royal Caribbean International caused confusion when it published a premium VIP package, The Premier Pass, on its website. The package promised unique cruise experiences for two guests, but the cruise line later retracted the offer, stating that it was not available. On Sunday morning, Royal Caribbean's social media channels shared updates with guests that the package was mistakenly offered.

What to Expect on a Cruise: Visiting Cruise Ports

cruise ship dock

Mediterranean Mooring, or Med Mooring for short, is a docking technique developed to overcome the logistical issues of docking in some of the Mediterranean Sea’s most popular and crowded ports. While most maneuvering is carried out using the cruise ship’s primary propulsion system and secondary side thrusters, they can also request assistance from tugs operating within the port. The captain must account for the wind, tide, and current when approaching the dock, and the crew must secure the ship to the dock using ropes attached to the ship’s bow and stern. This process involves bringing a ship alongside a dock or pier to load or unload cargo, passengers, or supplies.

When you come back onto the ship after your day in port, your card will be swiped again. This is how your ship will know if you still haven't arrived back onboard as it gets closer to sailaway time. As you disembark, you'll find shopping, restaurants, tour operators and attractions within walking distance.

Due to government regulations, ships often do not allow passengers to bring plants, live animals and certain perishable items (produce, meat and dairy products that aren't prepackaged) back onboard. This rule can apply to something as seemingly harmless as a woven palm hat or a leftover apple from your lunch. If in doubt, don't spend your money on something you might end up having to throw away.

Los Angeles Cruise Port

The advantages of being on the port side of a cruise ship include a view of the land, which can be particularly appealing when the ship is entering or leaving a port. Additionally, the port side may be less affected by the sun, making it a cooler option during hot weather. Although there’s no rule specifying which ship side docks, it’s often the port side, as most ships house engines and propellers on the starboard side, facilitating port-side maneuvering. Cruise ships can dock on either the port or starboard side, determined by the dock’s location and wind direction.

Some ships will dock or tender passengers within a few steps of major sites and attractions. Others might dock at a large industrial port and require you to walk a distance or take a shuttle or taxi to restaurants, shops and other places of interest. In ports where you'll need a visa, your cruise line will generally make those arrangements for you. However, in some countries (like Russia, for example), you'll need to make your own visa arrangements if you're not planning to explore on a tour with a licensed guide. Check with your cruise line for the specific requirements for the ports on your sailing.

It allows passengers and crew members to board and disembark the cruise ship safely. When this is carried out smoothly, it will enable passengers to begin and end their voyage and visit exciting shore destinations for day trips and shore excursions. Embarking on a cruise soon and wondering about the nautical terms, docking procedures, and which side of the ship might offer you the best views? In high-traffic ports, larger ships can be forced to dock at a specific angle, allowing the port authority to maximize their limited space. Even if a port is not particularly busy but is on the smaller side, they could request specific docking techniques to prevent larger ships from blocking in others.

What are the advantages of being on the starboard side of a cruise ship?

Additionally, the starboard side may be more affected by the sun, making it a warmer option during colder weather. The decision to dock on the port or starboard side depends on several factors, including the port’s layout, the size of the ship, and the direction of the wind and current. In some cases, the captain may need to dock on a specific side due to the port’s restrictions or regulations. Due to weather conditions and other unforeseen factors like medical emergencies or mechanical failures, port stops can be changed or canceled.

As mentioned, safety takes priority whenever any cruise ship is being docked. The entire procedure can be called off if docking cannot be performed safely. Safety is always the number one priority with any complicated process like docking. The ship’s crew is readied to react to any sort of emergency that could feasibly occur during the docking procedure. Depending on the chosen docking technique, the ship’s propulsion system and thrusters work together to position the ship.

This is usually for much smaller vessels rather than large cruise ships. When a port does not offer sufficient docking facilities for full-sized cruise ships, it is possible to anchor offshore, then transport cruise passengers to the shore using smaller ferries. The docking procedure for cruise ships hinges on several factors, among them the cruise type. For instance, an Alaska cruise may have different procedures than a closed-loop or one-way cruise.

Top 30 Cruise Accessories You'll Want to Have Packed

cruise must haves

While every cabin has air conditioning, they don’t have fans of any kind. That’s not an issue if you have a balcony and open your door, but any interior room is going to get a little stuffy — especially if you’re the sort of person that’s used to airflow. Luckily, you can bring aboard a portable fan like this one. As a bonus, a fan makes a great white-noise machine to help drown out any sounds from neighboring cabins.

A portable charger is also great for long days spent in port exploring or on an excursion. You won’t want your phone battery to die, so having a portable charger is a must. Packing cubes help keep your suitcase perfectly organized. I’ve also found that I can simply pack more because they slightly compress everything.

DON’T TAKE anything prohibited by the cruise line

Some must-pack items for cruises defy categorization but are important nonetheless. Other types of footwear to add to your cruise packing list are sneakers for athletic activities, flip-flops for the pool and beach, and dress shoes for dinner. (Ladies, try to match your outfits, so you only need to bring one pair of heels.) You might also want casual or athletic sandals, hiking boots or water shoes for rocky beaches.

Cruise-Approved Power Strip

In addition to my travel hack tips I want to share one non purchase secret. Make a photocopy of your passports and tickets and keep them in a separate location. This piece of added security that hopefully you will never ever need.

Many Caribbean islands (such as St. Thomas), have laws against using chemical sunscreen, and can issue fines. Water shoes will be useful if you’re going to a rocky beach or an excursion where water shoes are recommended. We made the mistake several years ago of going to Dunn’s River Falls, Jamaica and needing to buy the shoes on site. Poo-Pourri bathroom spray is a cruising essential that may not be talked about much, but it works.

Cruise Wardrobe Essentials

If you prefer not to fuss with towel clips, towel bands from Cruise On can be a great alternative. These strong, sturdy bands are large enough to attach around most deck chairs and will firmly hold towels down even in the breeziest conditions. When you’re ready to leave, the bands can also help roll up your towels and other beach gear to keep it compact. Keeping your passport, credit cards, and cash safe while you travel is a serious concern.

Extra Items to Pack for Your Cruise

It helps reduce plastic waste, and you don't bust your budget buying bottled water. For long and overnight flights to your cruise, pack accessories for the plane. If you've scheduled a pre-cruise hotel stay, consider packing the necessities for that overnight in a separate bag so you don't need to unpack and repack your main suitcase. It's always smart to pack a first aid kit for your cruise; make sure it contains seasickness remedies if you're sensitive to the motion of the ocean. Over-the-counter medications are pricey on board, so bring the brands you most commonly use. If you take prescription medicine, bring enough for the trip and a few extra days' worth, just in case.

This is one the best cruise accessories ever invented. If you’ve cruised, you can relate… it’s 2am and you have to pee. You step on the conch shell souvenir you picked up in Nassau. This motion sensor night light gives a soft light when you get up.

You can whip out your packed cubes and simply place them in the drawers and shelves of your stateroom. So if you are flying to the cruise port, then you’ll have to pay any baggage fees your airline might charge. You also have to carry your bags to the terminal to drop off for the luggage handlers.

If you’re cruising with multiple people in your stateroom, you will likely want more available plugins in your cabin. While newer ships are starting to incorporate more outlets in each cabin, older ships are still limited to just one or two outlets. As such, I purchased this electronics organizer for traveling and cruising - it’s been a total game changer! This organizer has tons of pouches and mesh pockets to keep everything perfectly organized in my carry-on bag and even in my stateroom.

Clothing will make up the bulk of what you’ll bring on a cruise, and rightly so. With so many different scenarios to dress for on a cruise, it’s helpful to bring a little bit of everything. While many of the above cruise essentials apply to Alaska, you can expect an Alaskan cruise to be a lot more varied regarding the weather and what sights you might expect to see. Depending on where you are traveling, insect repellent is essential in some locations, especially the hot and tropical excursions and when near water and beaches.
